How Much Does a West Virginia Medical Marijuana Card Cost?

The short answer

Getting a West Virginia medical marijuana card involves two separate payments. The first is the physician certification, which is what MedCardMD provides. The second is the state registration fee, which you pay directly to the West Virginia Office of Medical Cannabis (OMC). For most new patients, that adds up to about $200 for the first card: $150 for the certification visit and $50 for the state card.

Nobody likes surprise charges, so this page walks through each cost, who collects it, when you pay it, and which expenses are not part of the card at all.

Cost 1: The physician certification ($150)

West Virginia requires a registered physician to certify that you have a qualifying medical condition before the state will issue a patient card. At MedCardMD, the initial certification is $150. That fee covers:

• A review of the medical records you provide showing a prior qualifying diagnosis
• A private telehealth evaluation with Dr. Robin Arora, MD, from your phone or computer
• Entry of your certification into the state system if you are approved
• Plain-language help with the next steps in your OMC patient profile

The most important detail: you only pay if you are approved. If the physician determines you do not qualify, you are not charged the certification fee. Because this is a telehealth service, there is also no drive to an office, no parking, and no time off work for a waiting room.

Cost 2: The state registration fee ($50)

After your certification is entered, you finish your application in your OMC patient profile and pay the state’s $50 registration fee there. This payment goes to the state, not to MedCardMD, and we cannot collect it for you or refund it. Once the certification is in place and the state fee is paid, cards typically arrive in 10 to 15 days.

State fees and procedures are set by West Virginia and can change. Before you pay, confirm the current amount on the OMC website.

Patients under 18 and caregivers

A patient under 18 must have a registered caregiver. The caregiver registers with the state through the OMC, and any caregiver-related requirements or fees are set by the state. Check the OMC website for the current caregiver rules before you begin so the family can plan ahead.

Renewal costs

A West Virginia card does not last forever. When it approaches expiration, you need a new physician certification and must renew your registration with the state. MedCardMD’s renewal certification is $100, and the same pay-only-if-approved policy applies. The state’s registration fee at renewal is paid through your OMC profile, as with your first card.

Timing matters. You can renew no sooner than 30 days before your current card expires, so mark that window on your calendar. Starting inside the window helps you avoid a gap between cards. Our renewal page explains what to have ready.

Costs that are not part of the card

Your card gives you legal access to purchase from licensed West Virginia dispensaries. It does not include any product. Prices for medical cannabis are set by dispensaries and vary by product type, strength and location. Health insurance generally does not cover medical cannabis products or certification visits, so plan on paying out of pocket.

A few other small costs can come up, depending on your situation:

• Requesting copies of medical records from a past provider, if that office charges a records fee
• A device with a camera and internet connection for your video visit, if you do not already have one
• Replacement card fees set by the state if a card is lost, which you can confirm with the OMC

How to avoid paying more than you need to

Be cautious of services that bundle vague “processing” or “membership” charges on top of the certification. The state fee is paid to the state; a certification service should be clear about exactly what its own fee covers.
